Information
I love photographing
newborns! There is something incredibly
special about a baby fresh from heaven, and I love creating beautiful artwork of these precious angels! As magical as this time is, there is a lot of
preparation required to capture it beautifully on camera. Here is some information that will help you
prepare, and help our session go smoothly.
Scheduling your
Session
I recommend
scheduling your session well in advance of your baby's birth to ensure that I
have availability. Let me know your due
date early, and I will get it on my calendar.
After baby is born please shoot me an e-mail so we can nail down a
specific day and time. I would love it
if you would put me on the "baby is here!" text list.
The best time to
photograph a baby is within the first 3-5 days of life. Baby's will often sleep comfortably through
the session in those first days, which is essential to capturing beautiful
images (especially the sweet sleepy ones!).
The older they get, the more they want to stretch, and cry, and the less
they want to pose. Newborn acne, and
colic are much less likely to be an issue in the 3-5 day old time frame as
well.
Location
While we are
building my new private studio, I am offering in home photography! I will bring my studio to you, and set it up
in your home. Home is a very comfortable
environment for baby, and for your family, which is certainly an added bonus!
A new family
snuggled up in bed is simply beautiful.
If these shots appeal to you, have the bed made with a solid patterned,
light colored, blanket or comforter (I can supply one if needed).
Baby's nursery is
another great place to capture some treasured memories in the home environment.
Please don't be
concerned if your house is a mess! You
just had a baby! If you didn't have
laundry and dishes piled up, and baby things strewn about, I might hire you to
come figure out how to keep my house from being destroyed by my two little
tornados. Perfection is not
expected! I have shot before and after moves, and I can work with very little space. I will likely need to move some things
around to get the best possible light, but don't worry, I will things back
together before I leave.
Speaking of light…
when I arrive, if you could give me a short tour of your home, or more
specifically your windows, that will help me choose the best spot to set up my
studio. Natural light is my favorite to
use when possible. I will likely set up
near your biggest window, and will need to open blinds, and pull back curtains
in the location we choose. I will also
bring a back-up studio light if we need it.
Props
I will be bring my
collection of blankets, hats, headbands, baskets, and things with me. I also encourage your props! If you have any specific shots you want
taken, or props you want used, please let me know in advance of our shoot. This will allow me the preparation time I
need to successfully capture what you want.
What to Wear
Keep it Simple!
Solid colors, close to your skin tones are best. Also, have your hands and feet prepared for
the camera, because I will almost definitely focus on them in some shots.
*Keeping Baby
Comfortable*
Warmth
The most important
thing is to keep baby comfortable and safe.
I recommend cranking up the heat to a toasty 80 degrees about 30 minutes
before my arrival, and dressing in layers to keep comfortable yourself . I will also bring a small space heater for
baby, so that they won't mind posing in the nude for us (warmth is essential
for their comfort, and for getting those simple fresh naked baby shots). If you don't mind making extra trips to the
dryer so that you can bundle baby in a toasty blanket between shots, you get
extra credit! Babies love that!
Clothing
30 minutes prior to
our shoot, please dress baby down to nothing but a loosely fastened diaper and
warm blanket. This gives plenty of time
for diaper marks to fade, and makes it easy to remove the diaper for posing. Although baby will spend most of the session
in the nude, I will always pose them and shoot from angles to ensure that no
private parts are on display.
Sleepy
A sleepy baby is a
happy and cooperative baby! Please make
great effort to keep baby awake for around 2 hours before our session. This may not sound like much fun, but it will
make a world of difference when it comes to getting the shot that will be on
your wall and in your memory forever.
Full Tummy
A full tummy also
makes for a happy baby! If you could
feed and then burp baby when I arrive, and while I am setting up my studio,
that should ensure a nice full tummy, and hopefully a happy baby! We can take as many breaks as we need to feed
baby during the session as well.
Quiet
Whatever you can do
to help block out noise during a session would be very helpful. I will bring a white noise machine to aid in
a quiet environment as well. If you have
other children that may alter the peaceful environment, it might be a good time
for Grandma or Aunty to take them out for a play date for a few hours (after a
few sweet sibling shots of course!)
Patience
A newborn session
generally takes from 2-4 hours. We will
go with baby's mood, and let them dictate when to eat, sleep, and what poses
they are willing to do. If sleep doesn't
happen, its ok! Bright eyes make for
beautiful photos too!
Relax
If you are relaxed,
baby will likely pick up on your mood, and relax as well. Newborn photography is a waiting game. If
baby is fussy, or having a hard time settling, don't stress. We are likely to spend half the shoot
feeding, changing, and snuggling baby to get them comfortable. I will work with what baby gives us. In fact, some of the most precious shots come
from a time that baby is doing what they want to do, rather than cooperating
with my plan.
Poop
Don't stress when
baby lets it go on one of my props. I
guarantee you this will happen! It is
perfectly ok! Everything I bring will be
clean, prepared, and washable. Do be prepared with extra wipes, towels,
blankets, and diapers, so that we can transition smoothly when this happens.
Safety
If at any time you
are uncomfortable with a pose, please let me know. Safety is my #1 priority, and I will not pose
your baby in a way that will put them at risk.
In any poses that require more support, I will always have a parent
assistant right next to baby.

Information
Congratulations on being a Senior! I look forward to getting to know you, and capturing some awesome shots of you at this special time of life. Here are some tips on preparing for your shoot:
Relax and have fun! I will help you pose, and we will have a great time!
Clothes
Bring several outfit options ( I will help you narrow it down to 3, usually one casual, one formal, and one full of your personality)
- Keep these options simple. Avoid busy patterns, solids come across best. Large logos are very distracting and should be avoided.
- Wrinkles will show, and be quite distracting. Have everything wrinkle free, and try to keep it that way traveling to your shoot.
- We want your outfit to coordinate from your head to your toes!
- Speaking of toes, have your hands and feet ready for the camera, some shots will include or maybe even focus on them!
Accessories
Bring things that speak about you and your interests. This can include sports gear, books, shoes, musical instruments, cars/motorcycles, hats, jewelry, stuffed animals! Anything that tells us about you!
Hair
Avoid drastic changes before your photo shoot. Please come prepared with what you need to keep your hair out of your eyes.
Weather
If its a rainy I will only be able to offer indoor studio shots.
Feel free to bring along a friend or family member. You can take some shots with them if you would like.
Complexion
Do your best to cover up blemishes with make-up. Then, don't worry about it! I'll do the rest with photoshop!
Glasses
Think about if you want to wear your glasses during your shoot. If you do, make sure you have no glare lenses. If you don't have no glare lenses, you may be able to borrow a similar pair to yours from your eye doctor. Lenses that glare will make it very difficult to get a good shot.
For the Girls
Jewelry
Bring several jewelry and accessory options that go with and compliment your outfits. Simple jewelry adds to photos, but if it is too large or flashy, it will distract from the most important part of the photo, you!
Shoes
Heels photograph really well! Casual shoes don't! Barefoot is fun too! I recommend bring a pair of heels, boots, and flats that coordinate with your outfits.
Make-up
I recommend wearing a little more than your everyday wear. If you usually wear none, or very little, I recommend getting it done for your session. It will add contrast to the photos, and enhance your features.
Hair
Have it down, or at least partly down. Its fine to change your hairstyle, or add accessories, but it should be a 5 minute or less change.
For the Guys
Clothing
If you are feeling uncertain about what to wear, or your style is super casual, get some help from Mom, or a girl to help you choose some outfit options.
Shoes
Gym shoes and flip flops don't photograph well. Bring several formal, and nice casual options.
Shaving
If you generally don't have a beard or stash, clean shaven is the way to go and will look best in the photos.

Information
My family is the most precious thing I have on this earth! And I love photographing families! We will do some classic poses, and we will also have a lot of fun during our session! Running, laughing, jumping, and interacting are my favorite shots to get. So if you book a session, prepare to relax, and have a great time with your family!
Tips for a great photo session
- Relax and have fun! I love taking photos of families and kids having a great time! We will do some posed shots, and some of your family interacting with each other however you do!
- Expect a bit of chaos, and know that it is ok! Family photos take a lot of preparation, and coordination, and can be difficult (especially for kids…and husbands!) But don’t worry! Afterwards, we will have had a great time, and you will have a beautiful piece of family history to hang on the wall.
- Prepare your kids for the session by telling them what to expect, and maybe even practicing holding still, and smiling at one specific spot. I support bribery! But if you don't, prepare to employ your best methods to inspire cooperation.
- Keep smiling and looking into the camera. I as the photographer will likely be doing all sorts of silly things to get your kids to smile and laugh. It helps me a great deal if the adults just keep smiling and looking, and let me get those kiddos lookin for ya!
- If you are behind the camera with me, I would love it if you could act ridiculous with me! Parents are always the best at getting a laugh, or natural smile out of their kids! I won't judge you for any ridiculous behavior, or tell your friends, or post it to facebook!
- When I am photographing your kiddos, enjoy a nice break from telling them what to do, and let me do it for you! Kids can get confused when there are too many people giving directions. I would however love your help if we are having any behavior issues.
- Please bring some of your child's favorite accessories (toys, blankets, hats, sunglasses etc.) I love themed shoots... for example if your son loves trains, bring along a train car or two, and his conductors hat! If your daughter is a fairy princess, don't forget her wings, wand, and tutu! If we are just photographing your child, feel free to bring two different outfits!
- What to wear:
- This is a big one! The artistry of our images begins with you! Think about the feeling you want your photos to evoke. Formal? Casual? Beachy? Candid? Vintage? Serious? Fun? Let me know what look you are going for, and I can help you prepare. Our most recent family photo had a vintage 1920's feel. My boys wore suspenders, bow ties, and drivers caps, and I sported a 1920s headband with hair wave.
- Have your outfits chosen several days in advance. Lay them out together to make sure you like how they look together. Make sure everyone has a chance to try theirs on. I like to get opinions of friends too (including google, and pinterest)!
- Don't forget to coordinate shoes. I would shy away from tennis shoes. They come across very sporty, and are so difficult to match. In a recent photo shoot, all the kids wore blue converse! We got the cutest shot of just their feet, and it was so fun! Flip flops, or barefoot is a casual but coordinated way to go.
- Do wear simple accessories (like necklaces, hats, bow ties, etc).
- Don't wear clothing with words, or excessively busy patterns. Solids and very simple patterns come across best.
- Don't wear clothing that is uncomfortable, or revealing (there is plenty to worry about in a photo shoot without feeling uncomfortable, or wondering if you're adequately covered.) We usually do lots of fun posing involving jumping, laying down, and everything in between.
- Let’s talk colors! It’s wise to choose colors close to your skin tone. If you wear white, know that whatever you choose will lose a lot of detail, because I expose for your skin. (White however can be a nice glowy look.) I recommend choosing two main colors, and one color pop. Examples: Grey and Navy with an Aqua Pop, Brown and Tan with a Mustard Yellow Pop
- Want to keep it simple and casual? Go for two different colored solid shirts, and jeans.
